Everything I Needed to Know: A Tribute to Scott Lambert by Linda Truschke Scott Lambert worked as a Campus Minister at Pepperdine through the University Church of Christ from 1987-2005. He received his B.A. in Communication in 1985 and his M.S. in Religion in 1990 from Pepperdine. He married his wife, Kim, in 1988 and they have three children, Luke, Micah and Isaac. Scott partnered in Campus Ministry with La Juana Gill from 1990-1997 and Linda Truschke from 1998 – 2005. He received the Stephen Eckstein award for outstanding Campus Ministers in 2003. He currently serves part time as an Associate Minister for the Hilltop Church in El Segundo, CA, as well as a Regional Director for the Kairos Church Planting Ministry. ************ If you are reading this, there is a good chance you know Scott Lambert. And, if you know Scott Lambert, there is a very good chance you consider him one of your closest friends. At the “Kairos Summit” last year at the Hilltop Church in El Segundo, CA, there were over 100 people present. As we each introduced ourselves, it became apparent there were three common factors among all of us: We love God; we want to see His kingdom expand; and we are all best friends with Scott Lambert. How is that possible? How does one person not only know people all over the country –– actually, the world –– but befriends them in a way that we actually feel close to him? That is the ministry, life and calling of Scott Lambert. I had the opportunity to co-officiate a wedding in Colorado with Scott last October. Once again, I (who worked with him for seven years and should not be surprised) was floored. He knew every family member of both parties, where they lived, what church they attended and personal details about their lives. As we were sitting in a café planning the wedding, a stranger (NO ONE is a stranger to Scott) at a table nearby interrupted us to make some connection with Scott – “OH! I live in Alabama with John Jones! He knows you from…” and there it is - one more best friend for Scott Lambert. I worked as co-Campus Minister at Pepperdine with Scott for seven years. Many times in student planning meetings, Scott would not be there on time. We often began the meetings without him, each one of us realizing that he was probably just trying to get across campus and couldn’t help himself from talking to, and giving a huge hug to every person that he came in contact with along the way. Everyone has a “Scott” story. It could be a sleep walking or sleep talking adventure, a time he visited you in the hospital, or sat with you as you bailed your brother out of jail, or counseled you through a difficult time with your spouse, or a coffee date where his questions motivated you to ministry, or maybe it is how he left you stranded on an isolated beach at Lake Havasu until 10 pm with a student, not knowing if anyone was going to return for you. Scott has a way of laughing with his whole body (many a student would come through the CM office and imitate his speaking, laughing and the way he kind of hits you on the arm when he is making a point) and he is just as willing to laugh with you as he is to cry with you. Scott has a vision for the kingdom of God that is unparalleled. His role as Campus minister was not limited to ministering to current students. It included ministering to every member and visitor to our church, implementing church-wide ministries, (including a ministry to our visitors that is still growing and strong) and seeking the good of the larger Church of Christ. He constantly asked questions like, “How can we encourage local churches?” or “How can the students we ‘send’ from this place be leaders and servants in the local churches?” or “What can we do to grow the kingdom of God not only in this place, but far beyond?” Scott’s influence is well stated in what former student David Burcham said to him after he graduated Pepperdine: “I am beginning a ministry in my church, and I know what to do because I walked alongside you.” Scott changed that one person’s life, but many more were touched because of that relationship. Multiply that by hundreds and thousands, and you have the ministry of Scott Lambert. As Scott was leaving Pepperdine Campus Ministry to begin working with Kairos, a church planting ministry, I sat across from him at a Malibu coffee shop (his usual meeting place, often called his “office”). I had the overwhelming knowledge that the kingdom of God had been changed forever by my friend and partner, Scott Lambert, and that through his new endeavor of church planting, the world would continue to be transformed by his kingdom vision. I told him that books would be written about him when he was older, and that the history of the Church of Christ would have a large chapter devoted to him. Well, maybe I will write the first book, Everything I Needed to Know About Campus Ministry I learned From Scott Lambert. I am confident it would be a seller. Linda was raised in Fillmore, CA, a small town just 45 minutes north of Pepperdine. She attended Pepperdine where she received her B.S. in Organizational Communication and her M.S. in Ministry. Linda has been a campus minister at Pepperdine since 1998, and has served on the Campus Crosswalk Board since 2004. Linda is married to Michael Truschke, Dean of Admission and Enrollment Management at Pepperdine, and they have two wonderful and energetic boys, Justin and Eric. Linda's favorite things in all of life are playing and wrestling with her boys, rainy days, and seeing God transform the lives of students at Pepperdine. Linda is an amazing minister and a true testament to the love, affection and grace of God!

Re: Everything I Needed to Know Well said Linda! I have enjoyed spending time with Scott myself. He always looks for me at a lectureship or conference and sets aside time to catch up and pray together. Just recently he encouraged me by relating his similar story, being single and not getting married till his late 20's / early 30's (as I am). And every time I walk away inspired, and challenged. I cherish those opportunities to be mentored by an experience campus minister. And I hope to follow Scott's example as someone who loves the Lord, loves college students, and is involved in ministry for the long haul. I love you Scott!God's Peace,Tyler EllisCampus Missionary,Northern Arizona University

Re: Everything I Needed to Know My Scott story is right in line with your thoughts Linda. The first time I met Scott, he went out of his way to introduce himself to me. It was during the beginning of a worship service, and he could have easily sat down since things had already started. But he saw me and I could tell he was wondering, "who is this new guy I haven't met?" In a matter of seconds Scott was telling me what he knew about my home church in Calgary, and the people he knew there. I had only been at Pepperdine for two weeks, and when I landed in LA I did not know a single person in California. Scott's ability to make connections with my home helped me feel like I wasn't such a foreigner after all. In the same conversation he also convinced me to go to the Fall retreat and lead a small group. Scott didn't know that I had decided beforehand that I probably wouldn't go to the retreat because I was an older grad student, and I didn't really know anyone. In fact, I wasn't even sure how involved I wanted to be with the campus ministry period. But Scott made me feel like I was needed and that he wanted me to be there, so I decided I would give it a chance. I went to the retreat, made lots of friends, and was hooked on campus ministry. Not bad for a first time meeting! I can't help but wonder, what if Scott didn't make a point of introducing himself? He had every reason not to. But that's not Scott. People always come first with Lambert.A year later, Scott and Linda hired me as a graduate intern. I still like to tease Scott that he hired me, and then two weeks later retired as campus minister! Scott moving on meant I had to step up. An unexpected and life changing opportunity. I spent the next two years working alongside Linda in campus ministry, and it was hands down one of the most formative times in my life. I can truly say I would not be the man I am if it wasn't for Scott Lambert. Of course, I learned even more from Linda Truschke, but that's another article... Re: Everything I Needed to Know Linda hit it on the head. Scott has referred to me as a mentor over the years but, with Scott, the mentoring runs both ways. I might add, thank goodness he found Kim to keep him organized and effective! Thanks for lifting up Scott and his ministry for some well-deserved recognition.David

Re: Everything I Needed to Know I agree with all of it! The party never starts til Scott shows up and then it is always loud and fun and loving for all. What David said is sooooo true, the Kim part is essential and just as much fun as Scott!

Re: Everything I Needed to Know Amen, Linda! Both Scott and Kim are blessings to everyone that crosses their path. This is a well-deserved tribute.

Re: Everything I Needed to Know Our Scott seems to dwell in his own space-time continuum, in which every person with whom he converses is made to feel a part of something universally significant and of historical consequence. Which is good. Because for the rest of the time you can't even leave him a message because his voice mailbox is full. Love you, Scott!
