"There is none born wise." ~ Ptahhotpe, Maxims (24th century B.C.).
Koran Quotes (War and Peace Passages)
Editor's Note: War and peace are common themes in both the Old Testament and the Koran. The OT passages are historically specific descriptions rather than open-ended timeless instructions to commit violence. Open-ended timeless calls for violence against infidels, however, are common in the Koran. Several passages from the Koran below are commonly used by radical Islamists to justify violence to non-Muslims, but this may tell us more about the users than the book. I have also tried to include some peaceful Koranic passages. Every passage below has its own context and full understanding requires a full reading of the context. In some cases, however, the context actually sharpens the obvious meaning.
“Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal harshly with them.” ~ Repentance; Sura 9:123.
“The unbelievers are your sworn enemies.” ~ Sura 4:101.
“Whoever killed a human being, except as a punishment for murder or other wicked crimes, should be looked upon as though he had killed all mankind; and that whoever saved a human life should be regarded as though he had saved all mankind.” ~ The Table; Sura 5:32.
"Take not to yourselves friends of them, until they emigrate in the way of God; then if they turn away seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take no friend nor helper from among them" ~ Sura 4:89.

“When you meet the unbelievers, smite their necks then, when you have made wide slaughter among them, tie fast the bonds; then set them free, either by grace or ransom, till the war lays down its load.” ~ Women; Sura 4:47 To “smite a neck” means to decapitate).
“It is unlawful for a believer to kill another believer except by accident. He that accidentally kills a believer must free one Muslim slave and pay blood money to the family of the victim... He that kills a believer by design shall burn in Hell forever” ~ Women; Sura 4:92-93.
“Those who avenge themselves when wronged, incur no guilt.” ~ Counsel; Sura 42:42.

“Let the unbelievers not think they will escape Us. They have not the power to do so. All that you give for the cause of Allah shall be repaid you.” ~ The Spoils; Sura 8:60.
“...[You] shall not kill--for that is forbidden by Allah--except for a just cause.” ~ Cattle; Sura 6:151.
