Origins of Life: A Review

by Dr. Tom Mundie

Origins of Life
Biblical and Evolutionary Models Face Off.
By Fazale Rana and Hugh Ross

You’ve heard the story before and read it in your high school and college textbooks.  Billions of years ago inorganic molecules got together randomly in a primordial soup to form the first biomolecules.  These biomolecules gathered to eventually form the first cells.  These primordial cells were the first life on earth.  These cells then evolved over a few billion years to form all life on earth.

Is this the way life began?  Does scientific evidence support this theory? What does the Bible say about the beginning of life on earth?

Origins of Life is the next in a series of great books from the Reasons to Believe organization.  It is must read for anyone interested in science and the Bible.  Dr. Rana has a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Dr. Ross has a Ph.D. in Astronomy.  They are among a growing number of Christian scientists who are writing about the relationship between science and the Bible.

The authors take a unique approach in their critique of current evolutionary theories for the beginnings of life. They set out two models. The naturalistic model proposes that life began by a series of random chemical events.  The creation model is derived from an understanding of God’s creative activity as described in the Bible.  The authors put the two models to the test.  Does current scientific evidence support the naturalistic model or the creation model?  I won’t ruin the ending.  Read the book and find out.

You do not need to be a scientist to read and understand Origins of Life. If you do not have any science background you may struggle through the meatier sections. There are ample references to scripture and the scientific literature.  The authors also cover contemporary subjects related to origin of life issues.  What about life on Mars or Europa?  Could life on Earth have been seeded by aliens?

Dr. Tom Mundie has a Ph.D. in pathophysiology and is a Professor of Life Science at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In addition, he has lead the campus ministry at West Point for 11 years.  He also has begun a regular feature entitled Faith and Science in the Campus Crosswalk in which he will answer questions related to the science and the Bible.
